Unexpected Treasures
A castle on the prairie, a restored theater that once witnessed greats like Will
Rogers and Ethel Barrymore, numerous sculptures, 18th-century art and a Native
American Museum – these are just some of the many unexpected treasures you will
find in Ponca City.
The Conoco History Museum and Standing Bear Native American Museum and Education
Center are two brand-new museums set to open in Ponca City in 2007. One captures
the history of the oil industry in Oklahoma; the other features the history of
the Native American people.
Marland’s Grand Home, 10th and Grand, and the Marland Mansion on Monument Road
were both home to oil baron and Oklahoma Governor E.W. Marland. Built in 1916,
Marland’s Grand Home was designed by renowned Oklahoma architect Solomon Andrew
Layton. It now houses Native American exhibits, the 101 Ranch Collection, Miller
Brother’s Wild West Show displays, and the D.A.R. Memorial Museum.
The Ponca City Art Center, housed in the former Soldani Mansion, is home to
various exhibits in all media including painting, sculpture, clay, metal, fiber,
jewelry, printmaking, and photography. Each fall the center hosts the annual
Ponca City Art Show.
A priceless collection of oriental and western art, the Matzene Collection, is
on permanent exhibit at the Ponca City Library.
The historic Poncan Theatre offers a one-of-a-kind lobby art display, and live
performances by the Ponca City Playhouse and various performing artists from
around the county. Along with seven other film screens in Ponca City, the Poncan
Theatre offers first-run movies when possible.
Statues abound in Ponca City! Our most famous is the Pioneer Woman. One of Ponca
City’s newest statues is Ponca Chief Standing Bear. Statues can also be seen at
the Ponca City Library, Marland Mansion, Ponca Military Academy Park, downtown
and Centennial Plaza.
Beautiful and changing art displays in all kinds of media, live performances,
theatrical plays, first-run movies, and cultural events and activities take
place all year in Ponca City and on the Northern Oklahoma College campus,
