Ponca City got its name from the Ponca Native American people after the Cherokee Outlet Land Run in 1893. Standing Bear Park in Ponca City is the gateway to Native American culture in our area. A museum with an outdoor interpretive center represents six area nations – the Kaw, Osage, Otoe-Missouria, Pawnee, Ponca and Tonkawa.

There are numerous opportunities to explore the local Native American culture through pow-wows, social and ceremonial dances, tribal museums, as well as artifact collections at Marland’s Grand Home. Area tribal lands also provide casino gaming opportunities.

Just a few miles apart, two bronze statues stand as a tribute to the peoples who shared this land at the turn-of-the-last-century, and who still call it home today. Some were brought here against their will, and others came in search of a dream. Their story is one of endurance, hope, pride and determination.

Their shared love for the land bound them together in one sense, and set them apart, as competitors, in another.

They came from diverse backgrounds, but in the face of common opportunities and obstacles they were woven together like a patchwork quilt on the face of the land. Neither would turn back, and neither would walk away from the dream that carried them through  the difficult times.

Much has changed in the past 100 years, but the spirit that fueled the dream then, and the determination that keeps it alive today, has not changed. We are a people of varied cultures hoping to create a better life with shared rewards. We will not turn back because we truly believe our brightest days are still ahead.
